Overdraft Coverage Options
Life happens between paychecks—choose from free account transfers, overdraft lines of credit, or Courtesy Pay coverage to ensure your transactions clear when timing isn't perfect.
Three Ways to Stay Protected
Not all overdraft situations are the same, which is why we offer three distinct protection options. Whether you prefer free automatic transfers from savings, the flexibility of a credit line, or the convenience of Courtesy Pay, you control how your accounts handle shortfalls. Mix and match options for layered protection that works exactly how you need it.
Link an Overdraft Protection transfer to another deposit account you have at DFCU. When checking goes negative, funds transfer automatically to cover the shortfall — at no per-transfer cost.
A revolving credit line that activates when your checking account goes negative. Pay interest only on the amount you actually use — not the full credit line.
Backup coverage for when other options are exhausted. Available as Standard Coverage (automatic) or Full Coverage (opt-in for ATM and everyday debit card transactions). See details below.
Protection options as unique as your financial situation.

Free Overdraft Protection Transfers
The smartest overdraft protection costs nothing—automatic transfers from your other DFCU accounts. When your checking balance can't cover a transaction, we'll instantly move funds from your designated savings or money market account. No fees, no interest, no credit checks. Just seamless protection using money that's already yours.

Overdraft Line of Credit
Sometimes your own funds aren't available when you need them. An overdraft line of credit provides a financial safety net that activates automatically, transferring exactly what you need to cover shortfalls. Pay interest only on what you use, when you use it—far less expensive than multiple overdraft fees.

Courtesy Pay Coverage
When other protection isn't available or has been exhausted, Courtesy Pay can still save the day. This discretionary service allows transactions to clear even when funds aren't available, for a flat $28 fee per item. While more expensive than other options, it's invaluable when you absolutely need that transaction to go through.

Understanding Your Available Balance
Your protection works based on your available balance—not just what's in your account, but what's actually accessible after pending transactions and holds. Understanding this distinction helps you use protection wisely and avoid surprises. We post credits before debits and process items in order received to minimize fees.
